On August 1st, we stood in solidarity with our fellow countrymen and women, particularly our young people, whose futures have been mortgaged by the ineptitude of our political class and whose hopes have been dashed due to policy inconsistencies of the Federal Government. This stand was made clear during a World Press Conference on the State of the Nation, convened by CYPA Africa, #ProjectSprint, and the Citizens Coalition Against Impunity and Injustice.

Our Executive Director, Amb Chris Iyama, delivered a powerful message, reminding President Bola Tinubu of his oath of office to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians and to ensure their well-being. He highlighted the abysmal state of governance in Nigeria and called for immediate action to review or totally reverse policies that have plunged our citizens into severe hunger and hardship.

The Press Conference: Key Highlights

During the conference, we unequivocally condemned the current state of governance in Nigeria. The policy inconsistencies and failures of our political leaders have created widespread suffering, with many Nigerians facing extreme poverty and hunger. The call for change was clear: we demand urgent reforms to alleviate the suffering of our people.

Our message was amplified by the voices of several notable figures and organizations. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Gad Shamaki, Executive Director of Cleen Foundation, who lent his voice to highlight the numerous challenges bedeviling our nation. His insights and support were invaluable in strengthening our call for justice and better governance.

Media and Partner Support

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our friends from the media for their unwavering support. Their presence and coverage of the event play a crucial role in our struggle for a better country. By bringing our message to a broader audience, they help ensure that the issues facing our nation receive the attention they deserve.

We are also thankful to the various organizations and partners who stand with us in this fight, including Laz Apir, U.S. Mission Nigeria, YouthhubAfrica, CDD West Africa, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Nigeria, The Tattaaunawa Roundtable Initiative, SituationRoom, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre – PLAC, Norwegian Embassy in Abuja, INEC Nigeria, Mission 21, EiENigeria, Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa (YALDA), European Centre for Electoral Support, and the United Nations Development Programme – UNDP.

A Call to Action

Our peer-to-peer voter sensitization campaign, tagged #StopTheRants #GetInvolved, was initiated after observing the low youth turnout in the Plateau State bye-election on February 26th, 2022. The dismal engagement pointed to a significant problem: our youth are not participating in the democratic process. This campaign aims to transform youth apathy into active participation, ensuring their voices are heard and their votes counted.

Through initiatives like these and the recent World Press Conference, we are committed to driving change. We believe in a Nigeria where governance is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of its people. Our journey is far from over, but with the continued support of our partners, the media, and the Nigerian people, we are confident that we can achieve our goals.

Join us in our efforts. Stand with us as we demand better governance and work towards a brighter future for all Nigerians. Together, we can make a difference. Let’s end bad governance in Nigeria.
